Stijn Elshuis 'The sun is said to be a star'

A woman with a fear of square went on a world tour without putting a foot outside the door. In her lazy chair behind the computer, she traveled around the world with Google streetview. It inspired Stijn Elshuis to climb the highest mountains in the world and make a photo series about it. From behind his computer with Google maps.

The work of Elshuis focuses on how we experience nature in a digital age. His work represents a digital abstraction of nature and he uses digital techniques to represent natural phenomena that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

In the exhibition It is said that the sun is a star, Stijn Elshuis shows two series. In addition to the Googlemountains series, he shows work from the Unknown Matter series that consists of images from NASA's image database. Elshuis selected images that received the "artist-impression" label from the space agency. These are interpretations of data measured by NASA that have been converted into spectacularly colorful images. The images give the idea that the cosmos is full of color and spectacle while the cosmos is actually for the most part a vacuum, or a big nothing.
