On September 4, Jeroen Henneman (1942) presents his first major solo exhibition at an Amsterdam gallery in eight years. Henneman’s work is part of the visual collective memory of the Netherlands. His distinctive style and artistic choices are familiar and iconic to many, sometimes without people being consciously aware of it.

For more than half a century, Henneman has explored, with a sharp eye, the possibilities of drawing and the power of visual representation. His practice cannot easily be contained within a single discipline. Drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and work in public space are all part of an extensive oeuvre. An impressive productivity and an inexhaustible drive to work have been at its foundation. For decades, he has drawn, painted and constructed objects that come directly from everyday life. Objects everyone knows, but which in his hands acquire a kind of quiet monumentality. With a clear visual language, Henneman creates his own universe, playing with perspective, space and, above all, emptiness, leaving room for the viewer’s imagination.

For this exhibition, Vriend van Bavink Gallery has made a selection from more than fifty years of Henneman’s artistic practice. Naturally, the recognisable works will be on view, but the exhibition deliberately looks beyond the familiar image of Henneman. By presenting different periods, techniques and forms of his practice alongside one another, it creates space for a broader view of an oeuvre that has continued to develop over the course of several decades. The exhibition thus presents an artist who, despite the recognisability of his work, has never stopped looking anew.
